DIET THERAPY AS ONE OF ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

The top ten causes of death, excluding accidents and suicides, can be attributed solely to eating habits. These fatal conditions can all be prevented or treated exclusively with Diet Therapy, which uses food and structured diet to treat disease and improve or maintain health. No other therapy can make this claim.

Diet Therapy is the oldest known form of medicine. Ancient cultures around the world, from the Indians to the Chinese, believed in the healing power of food. These cultures provided the foundation of Western medicine; but unfortunately, this medicinal knowledge has been lost. Today, we no longer take advantage of food to achieve healing and wellness.

The Problem

To be effective, and to truly have clinical value, a therapeutic diet should consider a multitude of factors, such as:

1. Anthropometric status (Height, Weight, BMI,Ideal weight,Body fat percentage)
2. Biochemical status
3. Clinical/ diagnosed conditions
4. Dietary habit
5. Blood type
6. Autonomic type (neuro-endocrine)

9. Intolerances
10.Micro-nutrient imbalances
11. Macro-nutrient ratios
12. Lifestyle factors

While food is the foundation of health and healing, most physicians no longer have the time, expertise, or resources to design simple therapeutic diets, much less consider these many variables.

Finding Nutrition Facts

Getting reliable information about nutrition can be a daunting challenge. For
the most part, your nutrition information is likely to come from TV and radio
talk shows or news, your daily newspaper, your favorite magazine, a variety
of nutrition-oriented books, and the Internet. How can you tell whether what
you hear or read is really right?

Nutritional people

The people who make nutrition news may be dietitian, nutritionist, scientists, reporters, or simply someone who wandered in with a new theory (Artichokes prevent cancer!
Never eat cherries and cheese at the same meal! Vitamin C gives you hives!),
the more bizarre the better. But several groups of people are most likely to
give you news you can use with confidence. For example:


1. Dietitian: These are people with graduate degrees in Dietetics engaged in clinical sectors such as hospitals or medical centres, community service, catering and research sectors. A dietitian is a professional trained in translating the science of food, nutrition and medical nutrition therapy to meet the needs of individual or target groups, whether in disease or health. He/ she is equipped with the knowledge and skills to conduct nutritional assessment, prescribe medical nutrition therapy, provide dietary consultation for the treatment of diseases / illness, in both acute and chronic care. Besides this, the dietitian also play an important role in providing expertise in the promotion of wellness through proper eating, development of modified diets/ meals/recipes in the food service organization, catering industry and food manufacturing industry in various sectors. Dietitians participate in research and apply practice, based on scientific – evidence

2. Nutrition researchers: Researchers may be either nutrition scientists
or professionals in another field, such as medicine or sociology, whose
research (study or studies) concentrates on the effects of food.

3. Nutritionists: These are people who concentrate on the study of nutrition. In some states, a person who uses the title “nutritionist” must have
a graduate degree in basic science courses related to nutrition.


Consumer alert: Regardless of the source, nutrition news should always passwhat you may call The Reasonableness Test. In other words, if a story or
report or study sounds ridiculous, it probably is.
